Data: Tencent and Alibaba own 20% of total blockchain patent applications in 2019

According to The Block report, Chinese technology giants Tencent and Alibaba filed the most blockchain patent applications in 2019, accounting for more than 20% of the total. According to the data, Tencent and its affiliates applied for 718 blockchain patents, while Alibaba Group submitted 470 patent applications, which together accounted for more than 20% of the total of more than 5,800 blockchain-related patents. Tencent and Alibaba are followed by Chinese companies WeChat, Ruize Technology, and Ant Financial. About 63% of companies with more than 20 blockchain patent applications are located in China. But it is worth noting that although there are more than 5,800 blockchain patent applications in 2019, only 3% are granted patent authorization.
